The Space Project inspired by local drama teacher Hugo Ellis aims to explore issues of life and faith through drama and music. In the aptly dramatic setting of St. Johns Church in Broadbridge Heath, they have produced a varied range of high quality presentations over the last two years, and their latest production Seven Last Words is their best so far.
The Seven Last Words, referring to the final things that Jesus said as he was being crucified, were presented as containing the essence not only of Jesus’ own life and teaching, but of all human life –words of forgiveness, suffering, trust and hope-and as such relevant not just to Christians but to everyone in every age.
The hour long presentation mixed crisp and pacey ensemble playing with well delivered and moving monologues based around a series of short poems by the popular writer Adrian Plass.
Despite the seriousness of the subject matter, there was a pleasing lightness of touch about the whole production and several moments of wry humour among the more moving and at times quite chilling ones.
Altogether an entertaining and thought provoking evening presented by a group that shows increasing confidence and ability. Future presentations should be well worth looking out for.
